I am an East Coast expatriate hiding out in the Midwest... I am an urban gal living in the suburbs and occasionally hiding in the country I am a yoga practitioner, fitness enthusiast, believer in the mind-body-spirit connection... I am a mid-life "revert" to the Roman Catholic faith in which I was raised and which has become an enormous source of support, encouragement, inspiration, and joy in my life... I am a mom, sister, daughter, and wife... I am an explorer; adventurous and curious about the world and people around me... I am educated in the formal sense but I gain insight through everyday living... I created this blog at a time of great fear and apprehension in my life. I chose to sustain it because of the discoveries about myself and the world around me that it has revealed. What you can expect to find here: the documentation of a love-hate relationship with the greater Philadelphia area reminiscing about the good-ole-days (the 80's!) complaints about my various ailments and injuries, both real and imagined pictures and stories of gardening, decorating, shopping, sewing my love of irony links to kooky news stories way too much scatological musing for sane people

Well, It's a bit "irregular", "imperfect" but it's DONE!
I finally finished the zip-up robe for my daughter. I just packaged it up, but before I hid it away for Christmas, I took this picture. This fabric was pretty darn difficult to work with, in that I don't have an adjustable pressure-foot, so since it was slippery I'd occassioanly get snags from the bobbin threads. But it turned out ok. Last night I made my own bias-strip for the neck binding from leftover fabric and after attaching it, I realized it would look alot better with some lace trim to "balance" the lace at the cuffs so I had to rip it off and start all over, but I am glad I did because that little bit of lace looks pretty cute at the neckline. I was a bit disgruntled working with this fabric so last night I cut out one of the poodles in the print and hand-stitched around the edge as I plan to do a nightgown to "match" but in some pink cotton knit fabric I have, and then I'll just do the poodle as an applique on the front, and maybe also do the neck binding in the print fabric, too. Since I won't have to deal with a zipper or lace cuffs it should go together a tiny bit quicker than the robe. In case you can't see the print, its a lavender background with black hearts and pink and white poodles all over it, and then pink lace trim on collar and cuffs. Very "girly." I hope she likes it!

When I was a little girl, my mom made me a pair of shorts and a top - the top was solid with an applique of the little apple and worm print that was on the shorts fabric. It was one of my favorite outfits.
She made a lot of our clothes (and my Mr Bear) and all the tags said "Made with Love by Mommy." They were always my favorite gifts...
and I agree with Chrysalis that your daughter will be thrilled!

That's awesome, Brandy! It appears your talents extend beyond a mastery of the English language. Your daughter will love it!
Holy cow, do I kniw NY Bagel & Bial. The night of senior prom I stayed at the "purple hotel" down the road. Early the next morning, I went and bought everyone bagels.
Yes, I'm that thoughtful. ;)

thanks everyone!
Dreama, I totally know what you mean! I like working with midweight knits(I have a serger, too, which is essential w. knits.) the best; like panne velvet and stuff. I was actually hoping to get a cute velour for this project but alas, there was none to be had. After the nightgown, I plan to do an easy poncho for her in a light polarfleece for the spring.
All I know is that my "skill level" will never land me a job in a garment district sweat shop...although that's a *good* thing!

Great job Brandy! I love it, it turned out beautifully. The nice thing about sewing is we can cover up all the little boo boos and no one will ever know. hehe You would love some of my "masking" jobs and people tell me how wonderful it looks and I just chuckle inside and think, if only you knew. I'm thinking of a particular project right now, it was a santa suit, size 54 waist & the material was a nightmare. Long. long story but anyways really funny. I think you did a super job! She is going to love it! xo
