I am an East Coast expatriate hiding out in the Midwest...

I am an urban gal living in the suburbs and occasionally hiding in the country

I am a yoga practitioner, fitness enthusiast, believer in the mind-body-spirit connection...

I am a mid-life "revert" to the Roman Catholic faith in which I was raised and which has become an enormous source of support, encouragement, inspiration, and joy in my life...

I am a mom, sister, daughter, and wife...

I am an explorer; adventurous and curious about the world and people around me...

I am educated in the formal sense but I gain insight through everyday living...

I created this blog at a time of great fear and apprehension in my life. I chose to sustain it because of the discoveries about myself and the world around me that it has revealed.

What you can expect to find here:
  • the documentation of a love-hate relationship with the greater Philadelphia area
  • reminiscing about the good-ole-days (the 80's!)
  • complaints about my various ailments and injuries, both real and imagined
  • pictures and stories of gardening, decorating, shopping, sewing
  • my love of irony
  • links to kooky news stories
  • way too much scatological musing for sane people

It's LENT - Turn Up the Broiler!

Without any forethought (but with encourgemnet from a nice sale at the supermarket), I cooked up two great quality NY strip steaks for dinner last night. Complimenting the sizzling, simply prepared (salt & pepper then 16 minutes in the broiler) strips were steamed whole Haris Coverts (sp?) (French green beans) and a salad of baby spring mix greens with dried cranberries, roasted pumpkin seeds and goat cheese crumbles. Since we had no red wine in the house (we try not to drink alcohol on weekdays, anyway) we opted for simple ice water to drink.

I noted to hubby, "Gee, what did I make for Ash Wednesday but STEAKS!"

He and I (both non-practising Catholics) chuckled and then began our philosophising:

"Well, LIKE Jesus said we had to eat fish? I think He cares more that we don't eat alot of junk."

"Hmm, I think it'd be more offensive if we ate bread, since that's the physical form He takes on earth these days!"

    Yeah! That's the ticket!

So, in a wierd twist, I have come to the conclusion that a strict  breadless ( and pizza-less, etc.)  Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent will become our family act of reflection and self-sacrifice. I think I'll go get some lamb chops for Friday...

We don't do the Lent thing in our church....

But I got a chuckle that you're having lamb on friday.... Jesus is called the Lamb of God. ;) So i dunno isn't that worse than bread? lol

I know a guy who was kicked out of his Minnesota church for sponsoring a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper. We call him the "Pancake Pope."

Some people just have waaaay too much time on their hands, I think ...

Actually, paul said, it is not what goes into a man's body....

As a former Catholic, I felt like a dolt that it took me so long to figure out why all these people had ash on their foreheads. Fortunately, I didn't say anything. *Whew*

LOL I realized it was Ash Wednesday when I was rushing back to the office from my dentist appointment stuffing a Whopper Junior into my mouth.....alas I have bigger sins so I am not too worried.

ooh, Lyly, don't knock the LJS until you've tried it, heheheh.

Actually, my daughter LOVES Long John's so once every 6 weeks or so (that's all anyone's arteries can take!) we get some takeout. Its a bit over-salter but basically its dang tasty tempura-esque fish, chicken and shrimp. I skip the fries and 'puppies, natch. The batter-coating is heavy enough.

long john silver's always smelled so repulsive from the outside (the rancid grease) , i've never had a meal there because i can't step foot in one.

mm.. we had steaks last night too!
    and no bread.

    wow.
    spooky.

    lol

hehe, yeah, Lyly and Chrhys, it is fun writing about food.

Actually I think the idea orignally was to FAST, which many other religious/spiritual sects throughout the world have used as a tool for introspection, self-discipline, cleansing, purification. And I think it can be a good idea and have a positive result when done in balance with the rest of your life.

So I went without any (sugar-free) dessert last night as well - and had a nice suprise when I weighed myself this morning. hahah.

What REALLY makes me laugh, though is the Long John Silver's takeout joint around the corner has lines a MILE LONG to get in there every Friday during Lent! Oh yeah, Deep Fried cod and Hushpuppies have ALWAYS symbolized repentance to me - NOT! lol!

It's settled. Chops tonight. With stir-fried kale, spinach and garlic.

    Mea culpa.

Ah, steaks like that are the reason that we Lutherans stopped fasting five centuries ago! Seriously, that entry made me so doggone hungry ... okay, there has to be some nuts around here somewhere ... oh, what am I thinking???

My agnostic mother used to cook fish every friday year round saying that the lack of meat was a sacrifice. Never knew why she maintained this religious custom when she obviously didn't give a shit about the meaning; nutrition maybe?

Isn't it fun blogging about food?
