I am an East Coast expatriate hiding out in the Midwest...

I am an urban gal living in the suburbs and occasionally hiding in the country

I am a yoga practitioner, fitness enthusiast, believer in the mind-body-spirit connection...

I am a mid-life "revert" to the Roman Catholic faith in which I was raised and which has become an enormous source of support, encouragement, inspiration, and joy in my life...

I am a mom, sister, daughter, and wife...

I am an explorer; adventurous and curious about the world and people around me...

I am educated in the formal sense but I gain insight through everyday living...

I created this blog at a time of great fear and apprehension in my life. I chose to sustain it because of the discoveries about myself and the world around me that it has revealed.

What you can expect to find here:
  • the documentation of a love-hate relationship with the greater Philadelphia area
  • reminiscing about the good-ole-days (the 80's!)
  • complaints about my various ailments and injuries, both real and imagined
  • pictures and stories of gardening, decorating, shopping, sewing
  • my love of irony
  • links to kooky news stories
  • way too much scatological musing for sane people

    HIGH-carb

In my first pregnancy I was a lacto-ovo-and sometimes poultry "vegetarian" (i.e. - no mammal meat) UNTIL those hormones hit me and then I could not get my hands on steaks and ribs and chops fast enough! I craved beef all the time.

The past few years I have been a "sensible" low-carb person; moderate amounts of meat, high-fiber, whole grain products, lots of veggies and the occasional sugar-free dark chocolate bar with peanut butter as a favorite treat.

Now I can't get enough fruit, bread or crackers. Meat - just SHOPPING for it - turns my stomach. I almost passed out this morning at the grocery store in front of a case of NY strip steaks. I've been feeling cruddy the past few days and had to blow off workouts. Thankfully I got a second wind this afternoon after a catnap and did a 2-mile walk.

I can't quite place my fruit fetish of late. It was mostly pineapple in the beginning but now I indulge in watermelon, grapes, and dried fruits (golden raisins, dried cherries) too.

I go along with the train of thought that your body asks for what it needs. I refuse to believe that specific cravings indicate the sex of the baby. One woman tried to convince me that fruit cravings = baby boy. I poo-pooed her wives' tale and reached for another juicy piece of melon.

LOL....isn't it so odd how our bodies go through such CRAZY things when we're pregnant??? I remember things like one day, I would KILL someone to get some fritos and dip....and the very next day, just smelling them made me want to vomit! It's so bizarre!! LOL

But, there are worse things to crave than fruit! heheeh

LOL! Meat has been a total turn off both pregnancies.

With JOnas it was oranges. With Maggie it was sugar- cotton candy, pixie sticks, Lik-a-maid- literally sugar. Maybe that's why she's so sweet?? (Or maybe that's why my rear is turning into a helipad????)

The smell of raw meat turned my stomach all through my preg, the dad had to go grocery shopping for me. And I binged on fruit too so I wouldn't reach for the sweets - as a result I only gained 28 lbs (my goal was 25). You're doing great.

Neen craved beetroot with James, and junk food with Hannah.
    I craved sanity.

    Congrats.

    Where have I been?

    Oh yeah, in pain. ;o)

Hope you get to feeling well soon.

Lotta meat, lotta salt, hefty amount of fats too with all 3 of mine, although in different forms. Fruit and grains, which I normally love, definitely took a back seat.

I'm with you. Your body will tell you what it needs.

I still feel nauseous thinking of what my body 'asked for' during my pg with Hannah: Big Macs - couldn't get enough of them. With James, it was lettuce, cucumber, avocado - anything green.

Yeah, its wierd, I have looked it up online and found MANY women who had pineapple cravings; especially Asian women (not Asian-American but women in Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc, talking about it on local chat boards.)

Thankfully once my stomach settles for the day I can manage a small portion of chicken or turkey; eggs are still *gag* off-limits (turns my stomach) as is beef, lamb, etc. I know protein is importnat in pregnancy, as is iron and calcium (and folate, natch) so without the beef, I'll have to up my spinach intake; although the grain products I've been eating seem to have plenty of iron in them.

Fruit, me too early in the pregnancy and it was pineapple.. oh my god I could not get enough pineapple... then I ended up eating tomatoes.. AH!
Now it's pretty much anything... but I'm really on an iced tea, lemonade, koolaid kick... weird.

With Mara I was veggie.. I ate lots of pie though and mashed potatoes.. OMG... I would eat mashed potatoes every day!

With Sadie I ate lots of meat... lots and lots of meat. That's when I stopped being veggie.

With this one, it's just been different ... Although not really any aversions to anything... *thinking* yea, no aversions.

And all three girls... so go figure.
