I am an East Coast expatriate hiding out in the Midwest...

I am an urban gal living in the suburbs and occasionally hiding in the country

I am a yoga practitioner, fitness enthusiast, believer in the mind-body-spirit connection...

I am a mid-life "revert" to the Roman Catholic faith in which I was raised and which has become an enormous source of support, encouragement, inspiration, and joy in my life...

I am a mom, sister, daughter, and wife...

I am an explorer; adventurous and curious about the world and people around me...

I am educated in the formal sense but I gain insight through everyday living...

I created this blog at a time of great fear and apprehension in my life. I chose to sustain it because of the discoveries about myself and the world around me that it has revealed.

What you can expect to find here:
  • the documentation of a love-hate relationship with the greater Philadelphia area
  • reminiscing about the good-ole-days (the 80's!)
  • complaints about my various ailments and injuries, both real and imagined
  • pictures and stories of gardening, decorating, shopping, sewing
  • my love of irony
  • links to kooky news stories
  • way too much scatological musing for sane people

    Moving forward

    Hooray!

I got a call from our municipal administrator informing me that the building permit (and this is JUST for the sewer/water work, NOT the addition) was approved.

    Hooray!

And then he informed me that I have the priveledge of paying $1,770 for the permit and $400 for the bond.

    Hoo-f'ing-ray. Grrrrr!

Off I go to write a check for a very expensive piece of paper.

A colleague over here just related how many approvals (and how much each one cost) when he did some renovation to his home ... I could hardly believe it. It cost him as much to renovate as it'd cost us to build anew. Or more. God bless America.

yaay for the approval, but BOOOO to the cost! I think it is absolutely criminal, the way government charges for these things. do you have to pay for the building application forms even (whether you get approved or not in the end)? we do. it's just too much, and as far as I'm concerned it's all a money-grab & in many ways a make-work thing, so local government can justify having certain employees who mostly sit on their butts just shuffling this kind of paper around.

bah. this is one (more) reason why I'm quite happy to remain a renter.

Sheesh. Government power unrestrained -- isn't that why we revolted against the King over two centuries ago? Kinda makes me want to become a Libertarian. Oh wait ... I already am.
