I am an East Coast expatriate hiding out in the Midwest...

I am an urban gal living in the suburbs and occasionally hiding in the country

I am a yoga practitioner, fitness enthusiast, believer in the mind-body-spirit connection...

I am a mid-life "revert" to the Roman Catholic faith in which I was raised and which has become an enormous source of support, encouragement, inspiration, and joy in my life...

I am a mom, sister, daughter, and wife...

I am an explorer; adventurous and curious about the world and people around me...

I am educated in the formal sense but I gain insight through everyday living...

I created this blog at a time of great fear and apprehension in my life. I chose to sustain it because of the discoveries about myself and the world around me that it has revealed.

What you can expect to find here:
  • the documentation of a love-hate relationship with the greater Philadelphia area
  • reminiscing about the good-ole-days (the 80's!)
  • complaints about my various ailments and injuries, both real and imagined
  • pictures and stories of gardening, decorating, shopping, sewing
  • my love of irony
  • links to kooky news stories
  • way too much scatological musing for sane people

    The Kit

A few weeks ago, my daughter brought home a packet of info from the PTA. It explains an annual service, sponsored by the PTA, that is provided for parents by a third party. This third party assembles into a kit all of the required school supplies for a student in a given grade (supply lists vary per year.) When the student arrives on the first day of school, if he/she bought (or, that is, his/her parent bought) a kit, it is sitting on their desk in their classroom.

I have been using this service the past few years because it is quite convenient and always seemed like a bargain. It was usually around $20 or so for all of the supplies, plus they throw in some personalized stickers, envelopes for lunch money, etc.

This year, as I browsed the list for third graders, I read the price: $40.72!!!!

    WTF?

Are these kids getting Mont Blanc crayons? Cross pen & Pencil sets?

I'll probably write the check anyway, so as to avoid the lines and disappointment of sold-out items at my local Office Depot.

Wow, clearly I am a total & utterly shameless cheapskate.

I carry the supply list with me all summer, scrounging through garage sales and thrift stores to piece together what we need until I must visit Target for the remaining items during their back-to-school circus/sale.

And I like it. Add "crazy" to the shameless & cheapskate list.

I would be very interested to know what you're getting for $40...

We don't have any kits but I look for bargains over the summer. Still runs about $60-70 for both kids. Crazy. I can imagine how hard it must be on some families.

Yeah, I buy "the kit" too. I found I don't save any money going out and hunting all that stuff down myself. I just want to know why the list is so long! I remember showing up on the first day of school with just a hammer and chisel to scratch onto the cave wall!

It hasn't even begun to start to begin, yet.
Just wait: One minute the kid is wearing a lurid orange sweat suit chosen by you, the next: Staggering around on her Blahniks, with a Yorkshire Terrier dangling desultorily out of her D+G tote bag. You should gladly hand over the 40, in fact, give the teacher a tip of 10 bucks just because you can...
