I am an East Coast expatriate hiding out in the Midwest...

I am an urban gal living in the suburbs and occasionally hiding in the country

I am a yoga practitioner, fitness enthusiast, believer in the mind-body-spirit connection...

I am a mid-life "revert" to the Roman Catholic faith in which I was raised and which has become an enormous source of support, encouragement, inspiration, and joy in my life...

I am a mom, sister, daughter, and wife...

I am an explorer; adventurous and curious about the world and people around me...

I am educated in the formal sense but I gain insight through everyday living...

I created this blog at a time of great fear and apprehension in my life. I chose to sustain it because of the discoveries about myself and the world around me that it has revealed.

What you can expect to find here:
  • the documentation of a love-hate relationship with the greater Philadelphia area
  • reminiscing about the good-ole-days (the 80's!)
  • complaints about my various ailments and injuries, both real and imagined
  • pictures and stories of gardening, decorating, shopping, sewing
  • my love of irony
  • links to kooky news stories
  • way too much scatological musing for sane people

    saddened

I am feeling sad all of a sudden...that is, the nausea has mutated to sadness...I am listening to Kerry's concession speech. Its pretty ironic that now, after its too late, he's generating emotion in his speeches.

I noted on a fellow blogger's site that at least in my state we have the hope and promise of a new, energetic Senator, the so-called "superstar", barak Obama. I am really nervous about Obama in that I was so excited and energized when Carol Moseley Braun won that seat back when - imagine: an African-AMerican woman in the senate! How excitng and new! But she really disappointed us Illinoisans and did virtually nothing in office but exploit the "perks" of it. We felt so "used" after that. Some became cynical, apathetic. That is one of my concerns now: that previously apathetic people who went out to vote may lose its steam for many who felt that theie efforts didn't effect change.

I really hope that Obama can be the next Senator Paul Simon - a true statesman, a leader, a result-getter, liked across party lines. I am concerned that he's facing an uphill battle in a newly-Republicanized Senate, but we can only hope. Hope. Hope.

Obama's very REFRESHING, positive campaign slogan was "Yes, We Can!" This has to now become the mantra of our country if we are going to make a go of it over the next four years. Yes We Can create better relationships with other contries and cultures around the world. Yes We Can learn to be empathetic of others in our community, our country, our world. Yes We Can be inventive and tenacious and create new industries and jobs and opportunities. Yes We Can do all of this while respecting our land, our oceans, our planet.

Yes, We Can keep our ideals alive, sustain interest and energy in the world around us, and be active members of a dynamic and diverse society.

Its up to all of us to do so.

This is what happens when graphic artists work OT

I was watching the CNN and MSNBC websites like a car wreck...when I came across this graphic on CNN.com at 12:09 am CDT:

    Eyes on Ohio

What the heck is it?? It looks like Bush and Kerry are having some sort of psychic war! It was supposed to correspond with the headline: "Eyes on Ohio".

I dare you to post a witty caption for the above graphic in the COMMENTS section below.  I am streaming so many in my brain right now...but each time I try to type I start to giggle!

"Use the force, John!" (in Yoda and/or Obi Wan Kenobi voice...)

    The Candidate

I think I mentioned once that my kiddo nominated "Annie for President"

Annie is our very calm, cool, and collected Beagle. Here is her cirrculum vitae:

    Name: Annie the Beagle

Age: Unknown; estimated to be about 7 years old

    Size: About 25 lbs.

Education: School of hard knocks vis-a-vis McHenry County Animal Control/Shelter

Critical Skills: Totally housebroken and is vocal about when she needs to go; "sit" "down" and "beg" on vocal command; excellent cuddling and nuzzling abilities; internal clock tells owners when it is time to pick up child from school or go to bed. Keen ability to sniff out WWMD's in one whiff (Wascally Wabbits in My Driveway).

Likes: food, chasing rabbits and squirrels, belly rubs, more food, relaxing on the lawn on a warm day, sunshine, and dark quiet places to nap, and of course, people.

Dislikes: rowdy, rambunctious dogs and puppies, rabbits and squirrels that get away, getting her nails trimmed.

I find her to be quite "Presidential" looking...whaddaya think? :)

    Halloween costumes

I was really proud of how CUTE my kidlet looked in her homemade scarecrow costume yesterday for her school party. Very little sewing in this costume; mostly lots of hot glue, cutting, and of course shopping the thrift stores for the apparel to alter. It was cute, comfortable, safe, weather-appropriate, and colorful. You can't see it in the pic but most of the work was on the hat - a felt "crow" with googly eyes, lots of sunflowers and leaves and raffia. She was really happy at the results, too. (The scarecrow costume was 100% her idea; I just put it all together.)

I am amazed at the crappy costumes people put on their kids; I dunno, I guess I was spoiled as my mom or dad always made our costumes. But back then the store bought ones REALLY sucked. Now they do have some super-cute animal/plush costumes in the stores for little kids.

I think I will never forget the year (1976) my mother dressed us as "Feminists" for halloween: Me, age 7, in overalls, a train engineer hat, bandana and timberland boots (engineer); my sister in flannel shirt, jeans kiddie tool belt and yellow plastic hard hat (construction worker), and the baby in a beret with a "Pink Power" sign on her stroller! It was kinda like the Village People in reverse! You know I honestly think if the ERA had passed that my mom would not be a republican today. Meaning: I think she, like a lot of other women, were really let down and deflated when that amendment failed and lost their sense of idealism. It still makes me sad today.

    hope for recovery

I may have mentioned it before but I want to acknowledge this "issue" before it gets worse.  My father-in-law (as well as many others in his family) is an alcoholic. He almost died a few years ago (ruptured vessel in his esophagus) as a result of the abuse of his body for so long (booze and cigarettes.)

    Well...

He is 72 years old now and after a "happy" time after his stay in the ICU after what can only be considered "hitting rock bottom" he was doing great, on the wagon, on Zyban (wellbutrin) for smoking cessation...but alas, he refused to do the critical mental/emotional/psychological part of the puzzle.

He had gone through a 13-year period of sobriety, when my husband was school-age, due to divorce threats from his then-wife. But after early retiement, apparently a combination of boredom and frustration took over and he was back to his old habits.

We didn't have much of a relationship with him (dad-in-law) until he did get sober. Hubby and his brothers saw how bad his drinking had gotten about 6 months before his "bottomming out" and even organized an intervention, but it failed as he refused to enter a treatment facilty.

After his near-death, he sobered up on his own but again refused to see a therapist or attend AA meetings or other support group. He seemed great for about 2 years and we really started having a close relationship with him, "mending fences" as they say. My daughter got especially close with "grandpa" who would come over every Sunday for my homecooked dinner.

Something happened last year near the holidays. I suppose it was depression over his lonliness: 3 of his sons are out of state and his wife divorced him and moved to Florida with her gigolo boyfriend ( ANOTHER story for another blog entry!)

Part of me was angry with my husband and his brothers for not being more pro-active in supporting their dad, such as TELLING HIM OUTRIGHT: "Dad, we are so happy that you are sober." I told him. I am not sure if anyone else did.

Anyway, at some point he started drinking again, and would go on a bender, clean up for a short while, and then sink back into it. He started smoking again, too.

He ruined our Xmas eve last year: I cooked a big meal and he tried to sober up before he came over, but started going through withdrawl right before dinner. It was obvious, and to save himself some dignity, of course he lied and stated that he had "a sinus drip" that was bothering his stomach. He left just as I was serving dinner. Hubby and I were so upset that neither of us ended up eating anything.

It has pretty much been up and down all of 2004; and lately DOWN is the word. Not that he's just drinking but that he is pretty much constantly drunk. My husband warned me that ""I think dad is short for this world." I am earnestly seeking out funeral outfits just in case, because I think I don't know how else to direct my energy.

I also found out that my brother-in-law, hubby's eldest brother, is 12-stepping it. Yeah, he also suffered from the family curse. I hope he sticks to it as he has had some health issues in the past as well.

Which brings things back home. I have been very attentive to watching hubby's drinking habits. He does drink EVERY day - not a good sign. Usually 2 or 3 beers after work. No booze, thankfully.

However, he has some wild friends who, when he goes to bars with them, I can only guess that there are shots mixed in with the imported beers.

He has made an unfortunate habit over the past few months of going to a local bar after work 2-3 days a week to meet one of these "characters" (ick, I can't stand his friends...yet another story for another entry another day). When he does, he is always a bit later than he says he will be in getting home. He called as he was leaving the bar last night  to tell me he was going to be late, soften the blow, I guess. My daughter answered the phone and said, "Daddy, where are you? Are you at a bar? You should never go to bars ever again. Never ever!"

She has come to equate daddy at bar = daddy not home with her. He was shaken by her words and I am glad! I noted to him that considering the family curse, he might want to cool it. In fact, he didn't even have a beer with dinner tonight. I am really glad about that. If anything positive comes from the tragic events with his father, perhaps it will be his own temperance.

    up two...

Up 2 games to none for the Red Sox... yay!

I think what I am enjoying most is the fact that so many Cubs and Phillies fans have also become Sox fans in this series. Cubs fans, of course, always route for the loveable underdogs; Phillies fans hate the Cards for a number of reasons.

My daughter has really gotten into learning this game (baseball) and we do math problems based on game facts (Sanders has one strike, how many more strikes does he need to get out?) She gets both the math and the game rules right every time - I am impressed! I also watched some football with her today; that is taking a bit longer to learn but she has some of the basics down which is cool.

When I was a kid, I was raised as a ravenous Penn State fan (both parents are alums).

Eagles were cheered for gingerly at family get-togethers, as my grandad used to bet on football and we never knew how he bet so no one ever wanted to jinx a game! I think I was 7 years old when I asked at a family dinner, out loud, "Mom, what's a BOOKIE?"

Eagles squeaked by in OT today...geeze, kinda like my Cardiac Cats    have done a number of times this season.  They lost (but put up a decent fight) against heavy-duty Wisconsin yesterday.

    New Visitor

I am having more and more success with my bird feeding station.

Last night we had not just our usual pair (m/f) of cardinals visit at dusk, but a small FLOCK of them: three males and two females.

Today, my daughter and I spied a new visitor, and quite an attractive one: A white crowned sparrow (see specimen picture below)

    White-crowned Sparrow

If you have not had success at your feeder, you may want to keep trying and be CONSISTENT. Keep it filled and common birds will take note. Their activity will be noticed by other birds in the area and soon you will have a variety of species to watch. Another option or addition is a birdbath , but again, be sure (at least in warm months) to dump out the water each day and refill it to prevent mosquito and/or algae growth. I also use a scrub brush from the dollar store to remove any bird poop, algae, etc, before I refill it.

My 4 year old is so enthusiastic about identifying the birds that visit and she has gotten quite good at it, even distinguishing males from females in certain species! This feeding station is visible from her bedroom window so its a fun pastime, and brings a little bit of the outdoors inside, especially during this cold, dank weather.

My Pirate - wins the pennant!

I am glad I remarked that Damon was in a "slump" of sorts because, of course, tonight he was a Demon!!!!!  1 grand slam and then later, a 2-run homer...wowsa!

    Plus, some kickin' fielding.

And, as I remarked in my last post, he has this sweet, gentle voice, and gentlemanly demeanor.  During the post-game interviews with him, I just kept fantasizing about him on a white sandy beach in a loose, flowing shirt....oh man...what a "romantic" figure he surely makes.

And for you ladies lookin' for some cute white boy action in the Sox, I think Derek Lowe might be your ticket. Agan, with the long hair. Mmmmmmmmmm. Delish!

Gosh, last week I was all sad and menopausal and this week I am all "shook up" for these Boston guys! ;)

But my question is this: no matter what team I am watching - WHAT'S WITH ALL THE SPITTING, GUYS? EEEEEEWWWWWW!

    "My Pirate"

After avoiding it for ages (ok, a few months) last month kiddo and I saw "Pirates of the Carribean" FREE at an outdoor showing in a local park. It was a fun event and I hate to admit it (disney ain't one of my fave corporations in the world...) but I truly enjoyed it...Johhny Depp MADE it work, of course. I didn't find his persona "sexy" per se, as much as "intriguing".

Well, I think in last night's (and tonight's!) Red Sox/Yankees game I found "My Pirate" : long-maned, bearded and "exotic" Johnny Damon. Mind you, I don't find him "cute" like "oooooh, he's so CUTE *giggle giggle giggle*, but darn, his look certainly inspried imagery of billowy white shirts and golden earrings for me ! I believe Jerry Seinfeld would have him bedecked in an infamous "puffy shirt" .

And for all you NY fans, I have to admit that there are MANY men on that team with the most STRIKING green eyes...*sigh*.

Of course, both green-eyed Jeter and Damon are in hitting slumps right now...well if MLB ain't in their cards in a few years maybe they can work on a sopa opera or something?? ;)

Back in my youth I used to be quite a baseball fan...I wonder what happened? Oh yeahhhhhh....I moved to CHICAGO! (Cubs lose! Cubs lose!)

With the Astros up 3 and the Red Sox a possible entrant....what an OMINOUS and BIZARRE World Series it would be: Massachusetts vs. Texas!!!!!! Sound familiar?!?!?!?!
